Julie, Mike and Willem – thinking inside the box.

Here we go.

Today while Willem (who is 4 years old) is at play school, Mike will go pick up our hamper from the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. I’m nervous, but also curious – wondering what will be in there and what can be done with it. As a food writer it will be a change from the usual – most of my days consist of testing recipes or writing about food – and this week is going to be a bit of a shock, I’m sure.

Willem has his own food agenda most days, and I’m hoping he’ll be able to make do with what we get in our box. He may not understand why we can’t have his usual favourites. This is a challenge many food bank clients face – explaining to their own children that there isn’t much in the house, that what’s for dinner is what we have, not what we want. Which is, I think, a good exercise for us. I’m far too used to spending my days dreaming up interesting dinners, or addressing the ridiculous quantity of food in my freezer, rather than making do with not quite enough.

Stay tuned.
